What are the different types of boiler?

Glow-worm offers three main boiler types, so whether you live in a flat, terraced house or a detached property , we will have the boiler type best suited for you!

The three main types of boiler are:

  • Combi boilers
  • Regular boilers
  • System boilers

Combi boilers

Combi boilers known for their compact size and energy-efficiency, produce heating and hot water instantly, making them the most popular boiler choice in the UK.

A combi boiler will save on space as they do not require a hot water cylinder or tank. as they are on-demand system. However, this can mean that they only produce hot water for one location at a time so may not be the best boiler choice if you have a high hot water demand with multiple occupants.

Combi boilers are ideal for:

• Smaller homes

• Homes with less heating demand

• Homes with 1 bathroom

System Boilers

System boilers are fitted with an additional hot water cylinder, so your home always has a constant hot water supply and a comfortable temperature. The hot water cylinder can be fitted in your airing cupboard meaning they do take up more space than a combi boiler.

System boilers are more suited to homes with a low flow rate or have older-style radiators installed.

System boilers are best suited for homes with:

  • Multiple bathrooms
  • Regular water pressure
  • Higher heating demand

Check out our system boiler range if it's requirements best accompany your living situation.

Regular boilers

Regular boilers, also known as conventional or heat-only boilers, are boiler systems that store water in a tank to provide hot water and central heating at any time.

Regular boilers are typically best suited for larger homes with a high hot water demand. This is because you need two additional tanks, a cold-water tank (usually located in the loft) and a hot water cylinder (usually in an airing cupboard).

The additional tank makes this boiler type beneficial for homes that have a lower flow rate or water pressure.

Regular boilers and system boilers need a similar kW boiler depending on how many bedrooms the house has:

  • 2 bedrooms – 12-18kW
  • 3 bedrooms- 18-24kW
  • 4 bedrooms- 25-30kW
  • 5+ bedrooms- 30+kW

Check out our regular boiler range if this matches your home the most.
