What is a hot water cylinder?

Everything you need to know about hot water cylinders

Whether you're looking to upgrade your home's heating to a full Glow-worm heat pump system, or you're switching to a system or regular boiler, you'll need to know about hot water cylinders. In this blog we'll break down everything you need to know, before choosing the right one for you.

What do we mean by a hot water cylinder?

A domestic hot water cylinder (also known as a hot water tank or a hot water storage tank) is the part of your heating system that heats and stores hot water so it’s ready when you need it.

You can pair a cylinder with a boiler for dependable hot water, or with a heat pump if you want a more efficient, low-carbon setup.

A hot water cylinder stores heated water in a well-insulated tank. It works together with your main heat source — a boiler, a heat pump or an immersion heater.

Cold water enters the bottom of the cylinder. The heat source then warms this water through a heat exchanger inside the tank, typically a coil. As the water heats up, it rises to the top of the cylinder, where it is stored as readily available hot water.

Why do you need a hot water cylinder?

Instant hot water

A hot water cylinder stores heated water so it’s instantly available whenever you turn a tap — no waiting, just straightforward comfort.

Warm showers, without any dips in temperature

Water cylinders keep water at a constant temperature, so your shower won’t turn cold, even when multiple taps are running.

Hot water, even at busy times

During the morning rush or evening chaos, a hot water cylinder ensures you always have hot water ready to go.

The perfect fit

With a variety of sizes available, you can choose a cylinder with the capacity that’s just right for you, no matter what your demands are.
